Barcelona
Barcelona is more than Tapas
My wife is of Spanish decent and her fluency in the language makes our trips to Barcelona even more enjoyable. Our many friends living in this seaside town are always giving us tips for new places to try. Here are a few of those in no particular order:
Mercado La Boqueria St. Josep: everyone knows this place, and all I can say is get there early. In the afternoon, this place gets crowded with tourists from all over the world. You have many places to chose from, but be prepared to wait behind someone already sitting at the stand. Here are a few stands I love but just walking around and sampling Iberico ham, getting a cup of fresh fruit or freshly squeezed juice, is worth the trip.
El Quim: it's the eggs that they're known for, but everything is delicious.
Clemens: fresh from the ocean seafood and oysters
Bar Pintxo: some of the best tapas in Barcelona.
Kiosko Universal: a variety of small plates and my personal favorite.
W Hotel and its lounge Eclipse: great cocktails and views.
Barceloneta: massive seafood restaurant with every fish dish you can imagine
Suculent: incredible and very popular, must order the Arm of the Gypsy.
Bodega 1900: Albert Adria of the famed El Bulli it's a meal you will remember for the rest of your life. Order the olives. You'll thank me.
Uma: sushi fusion in a stylish setting with an international wine and sake list. Beautiful for drinks as well.
Ocana: in the famous Plaza Reial there are many outdoor cafe's and this one specializes in seafood. On a sunny day, indoor seating may be better.
**Many don't know Barcelona's aperitif, but I have to insist you at least try the vermouth. Its not your dad's martini mix but a pure glass of vermouth, ice, and an orange slice. It's sensational, and with the many Vermouth bars in Barcelona, they are easy to find.
Story: my pick for best vermouth bar, while there are more historic vermouth bars, this one has excellent tapas and a selection of the many different types of vermouth.
Marisco Paella: if the place has paella in its name, you have to think they do that dish well. This place does it as well as I have had anywhere else. Order a pitcher of Sangria and lots of luck finishing the large pan of seafood, chorizo, and chicken Paella.
