Napa

Napa, its not just wine

I've brought many people to Napa with high expectations of drinking California's best wines. I usually leave them just as impressed with the quality and diversity of the food. I can suggest a few that I've personally have dined at, with many more I'm looking forward to trying.

Here are a few on my list, but a suggestion, grab water or drinks (Non-Alcoholic smart ass) before driving into Napa as prices are steep. There is a good market in Yountville in which you can buy provisions Ranch Market Too.

In no particular order;

  • Bouchon: Thomas Keller's take of a Parisian bistro with an excellent wine selection. If you can't afford the French Laundry, this is the next best thing.

  • Addendum: Thomas Keller's casual eatery. You can take out or dine in on their picnic tables. The best thing about this place is the convenient online preordering and the must-try Fried Chicken. You’ll never want chicken from Kentucky again.

  • Bounty Hunter: part bar, part wine shop, and part BBQ restaurant this gem located in the city of Napa. While the BBQ is OK, the wine list and shop is most impressive. Eat at the bar, and don't be shy to start up a conversation with the locals.

  • Gott Roadside: a retro burger and hot dog joint with ridiculously good milkshakes.

  • Oxbow Market: an indoor market with a collection of many different places to choose from. Don't miss the wine shop in the back, it's filled with hard to find outstanding wines.

  • Bottega: Micheal Chiarello's high-end Italian restaurant is of my favorites. Excellent service and a vast wine list. Keep your eyes open and you may see Michael himself.

  • Farmstead at Long Meadow: located on HWY 29, this place is always jumping as it’s wine and food are superb. Outdoor dining is available.

  • Calistoga Roastery: I don't drink coffee as it affects my wine palate (I know I'm weird), but the breakfast and lunch fare is reasonable.

  • Oakville Grocery: Outrageously expensive deli is a more proper name for this place also on HWY 29. Though their food is outstanding, the prices reflect a lack of reality. Wines sold there are usually impossible to find.

  • Culinary Institute of America: a massive functioning school for future chefs. I say to any serious foodie to stop in and look at their library and gift shop. Both carry amazing selections of fun stuff to take home.
